Fixed wireless services have been available to consumers since the early 1980s, most notably as "wireless cable." Many Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) operators have been offering data services for a number of years, with a wireless downstream and telephone upstream path. The advent of new digital systems has greatly increased their capabilities and capacity. To illustrate the growth in this industry, 200,000 subscribers in the US in 1992 have grown to over a million, with 9 million subscribers in 90 nations.
With its beginnings as an alternative to wired cable television, Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) companies are developing standards for their growing menu of broadband wireless services. Following the much-anticipated completion of the US auctions in the spring of 1998, these companies are gearing up, with 1300 MHz of spectrum in the US to offer data, telephony and video services. These efforts will serve as a showcase for similar expansion worldwide. In addition, other millimeter wave technologies are growing, proving that fixed broadband wireless is the most efficient and economical bridge for the "last mile."
